Description
Swedish Apple Cake with Caramel is a cozy and indulgent dessert featuring spiced apples baked into a moist cake and topped with a rich caramel glaze. Perfect for fall, holidays, or any occasion, this easy recipe offers a delightful balance of warmth and sweetness.
Ingredients
For the Cake:
- ½ cup butter, room temperature
- 1 ⅔ cups sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- 3 cups diced, peeled apples (about 2 large apples)
- Optional: ¼ cup chopped pecans or walnuts
For the Caramel:
- 1 ⅓ cups brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons half & half
- 4 tablespoons butter
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch springform pan.
- In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each, then stir in vanilla.
- Gradually combine dry ingredients with wet ingredients until just incorporated. Fold in diced apples and nuts if using.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- While the cake bakes, make the caramel sauce: Heat brown sugar, half & half, and butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring until smooth.
- Pour the caramel over the baked cake. Bake for another 10–15 minutes until the caramel is slightly cracked and the cake is fully set.
- Allow the cake to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith or sweeter varieties like Honeycrisp for different flavor profiles.
- For a nut-free version, skip the pecans or walnuts.
- This cake pairs wonderfully with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for added indulgence.
