Description

Hawaiian Roll French Toast is a deliciously sweet and fluffy twist on the classic breakfast dish. Made with buttery Hawaiian rolls, a rich custard mixture, and a hint of cinnamon and vanilla, this recipe creates a perfectly crispy yet tender treat. It’s the ideal choice for a quick breakfast or a special brunch occasion.

Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk (whole milk or any dairy/non-dairy alternative)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 12 Hawaiian rolls, sliced horizontally (e.g., King’s Hawaiian sweet rolls)
  • Confectioners’ sugar (optional, for serving)
  • Maple syrup (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Egg Mixture: Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg in a large bowl until well combined.
  2. Heat the Cooking Surface: Preheat a griddle or skillet over medium heat and coat with 1 tablespoon of butter.
  3. Dip the Rolls: Dip each halved Hawaiian roll into the egg mixture until coated, shaking off excess liquid.
  4. Cook the Rolls: Place rolls on the griddle and cook for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown. Flip and repeat for the other side.
  5. Repeat: Continue cooking in batches, adding more butter to the griddle as needed.
  6. Serve: Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar and drizzle with maple syrup. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a tropical twist, add pineapple juice to the egg mixture.
  • Substitute dairy milk with almond or coconut milk for a dairy-free version.
  • To avoid sogginess, ensure the rolls are only lightly dipped in the custard mixture.
