What is Walking Taco Casserole?
Walking Taco Casserole is a dish inspired by the concept of a “walking taco,” which is essentially a taco in a bag. The traditional walking taco involves taking a snack-sized bag of corn chips like Fritos, and adding taco toppings such as seasoned ground beef, lettuce, cheese, and salsa. It’s a popular, easy-to-carry snack often found at fairs, sporting events, and casual gatherings.
The Walking Taco Casserole takes this idea and turns it into a baked casserole dish. It typically includes layers of crushed corn chips, seasoned ground beef (often cooked with taco seasoning), cheese, and sometimes other taco toppings like onions, tomatoes, olives, or beans. After baking, it’s usually garnished with additional toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, sour cream, and avocado.
This casserole is known for being a fun, family-friendly meal that’s easy to prepare and customizable based on personal preferences. It’s a great way to enjoy the flavors of a taco in a form that’s convenient for serving a group.
