Description

A modern twist on the nostalgic Sloppy Joe, this version features juicy ground beef or turkey, sautéed vegetables, and a smoky, tangy sauce. Served on toasted buns with customizable toppings like cheese, pickles, or slaw, it’s messy comfort food at its finest.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)

1 tbsp olive oil

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 green bell pepper, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup tomato sauce

1/4 cup ketchup

2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp brown sugar (or sugar substitute)

1 tsp smoked paprika

1/2 tsp chili powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

4 hamburger buns, toasted

Optional: shredded cheddar cheese, pickles, or coleslaw for topping

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add ground beef, onion, and green bell pepper. Cook for 6–7 minutes, breaking up the meat, until browned and vegetables are softened.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
  5. Let the mixture simmer for 5–6 minutes, until thickened.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  7. Serve hot on toasted buns with optional toppings like cheddar cheese, pickles, or coleslaw.

Notes

Use ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version.

Grated carrots or mushrooms can add more veggies and texture.

Add cayenne or hot sauce for extra heat.

Serve in lettuce wraps or over roasted veggies for a low-carb option.

Try brioche buns for a richer flavor, and always toast them for texture.
