Description
A modern twist on the nostalgic Sloppy Joe, this version features juicy ground beef or turkey, sautéed vegetables, and a smoky, tangy sauce. Served on toasted buns with customizable toppings like cheese, pickles, or slaw, it’s messy comfort food at its finest.
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
1 tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup tomato sauce
1/4 cup ketchup
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp brown sugar (or sugar substitute)
1 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
4 hamburger buns, toasted
Optional: shredded cheddar cheese, pickles, or coleslaw for topping
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add ground beef, onion, and green bell pepper. Cook for 6–7 minutes, breaking up the meat, until browned and vegetables are softened.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
- Let the mixture simmer for 5–6 minutes, until thickened.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
- Serve hot on toasted buns with optional toppings like cheddar cheese, pickles, or coleslaw.
Notes
Use ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version.
Grated carrots or mushrooms can add more veggies and texture.
Add cayenne or hot sauce for extra heat.
Serve in lettuce wraps or over roasted veggies for a low-carb option.
Try brioche buns for a richer flavor, and always toast them for texture.
