Ingredients
For the Cookies:
- 1 1/2 cups butter, softened
- 2 cups white sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
For the Icing:
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 2–4 tablespoons milk (adjust as needed)
- 1 tablespoon honey or light corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
-
Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until smooth. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined. Gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt, mixing until fully incorporated.
-
Chill the Dough: Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight. For convenience, freeze half of the dough for later use.
-
Roll and Cut: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to shape the dough into your desired forms.
-
Bake: Place cookies on parchment-lined baking sheets and bake for 6-7 minutes, or until edges begin to turn golden. Let the cookies cool completely before decorating.
-
Make the Icing: In a medium bowl, combine powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, honey or corn syrup, and vanilla extract. Add more milk, one tablespoon at a time, until you achieve a spreading consistency. Divide into bowls and add food coloring if desired.
-
Decorate: Spread or pipe the icing onto cooled cookies. Let the icing set completely before storing.
Notes
- Variations: Add sprinkles or edible glitter for extra decoration, or experiment with almond extract for a unique flavor. You can also customize the shapes using different cookie cutters.
- Storage: Decorated cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Leftover dough can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
