Description

Classic apple crumble, also known as apple crisp, combines tender, spiced apples with a buttery, crunchy topping. This easy dessert is a family favorite, perfect for any occasion, and pairs beautifully with ice cream or custard.

Ingredients

  • Apple Filling:
    • 6 medium apples (e.g., Fuji, Gala, or Granny Smith)
    • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
    • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
    • 1 tbsp light brown sugar
    • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 tsp grated nutmeg
    • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Crumble Topping:
    • 1 cup rolled oats
    • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
    • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter (cubed)
    • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat to 180°C (375°F). Grease a baking dish lightly with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. Prepare the Apple Filling: Peel, core, and chop apples into bite-sized pieces. Toss them with flour, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice in the baking dish until evenly coated.
  3. Make the Crumble Topping: Combine oats, flour, brown sugar, butter, and salt in a mixing bowl. Use your fingers to rub the butter into the dry ingredients until it forms a breadcrumb-like texture with some larger chunks for crunch.
  4. Assemble: Spread the crumble topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
  5. Bake: Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden and crisp, and the apple filling is bubbling.
  6. Serve: Cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Pair with ice cream, custard, or whipped cream for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Variations: Add nuts like pecans or walnuts to the topping for crunch. Combine apples with other fruits like berries or pears for a different flavor.
  • Make Ahead: The topping can be prepared and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days before use.
  • Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave for best results.
