Ingredients
- 1/2 cup salted butter
- 1 cup light brown sugar (tightly packed)
- 2 tablespoons corn syrup
- 9 slices of brioche, challah, or thick country bread
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup half-and-half
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add brown sugar and corn syrup, stirring until the mixture is smooth and free of graininess.
- Pour the brown sugar mixture into a 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
- Arrange the slices of bread on top of the sugar mixture, trimming them to fit if necessary.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices, ensuring they are fully soaked. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) in the morning. Bake for 35 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and puffed.
- Serve with fresh berries and whipped cream if desired. Enjoy!
Notes
- You can add cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard for extra flavor.
- If desired, swap the bread for a French baguette or any hearty bread that absorbs the custard without falling apart.
- Topping options include fresh berries or a drizzle of maple syrup.
