Description

KFC-style gravy is a rich, savory sauce that enhances comfort foods like mashed potatoes, fried chicken, and biscuits. This homemade version captures the iconic taste using a blend of chicken and beef broths, along with simple pantry ingredients. Quick and easy to make in under 20 minutes, this smooth and flavorful gravy is perfect for both everyday meals and special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Roux – Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add flour, whisking continuously to form a smooth paste. Cook for 2–3 minutes until lightly golden.
  • Add Broths – Slowly pour in the chicken broth while whisking to prevent lumps. Follow with the beef broth, continuing to whisk until smooth.
  • Season – Stir in onion powder and garlic powder. Adjust seasoning with salt and black pepper to taste.
  • Simmer – Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  • Serve – Remove from heat and serve hot over mashed potatoes, fried chicken, or biscuits.

Notes

  • For a deeper flavor, cook the roux until it turns a darker golden brown.
  • If the gravy thickens too much upon cooling, thin it with a bit of broth or water.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
