Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
- 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup (240ml) boiling water
For the Chocolate Frosting:
- 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4 cups (500g) powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
-
Make the Cake Batter: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line with parchment paper. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth. Gradually mix in the boiling water (batter will be thin).
-
Bake the Cake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
-
Make the Frosting: Beat the butter and cocoa powder together until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and milk, alternating, and beat until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract.
-
Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on a plate. Frost generously. Top with the second layer and frost the top and sides evenly.
Notes
- Optional: Add chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or fresh berries for extra decoration.
- For variations, try adding Nutella or hazelnuts between layers, or substitute the frosting with a dark chocolate version for a richer taste.
