Description
The Classic Philly Cheesesteak is a beloved sandwich from Philadelphia, featuring thinly sliced ribeye steak, melted cheese, and sautéed onions in a soft hoagie roll. This easy homemade version delivers authentic flavor in just 25 minutes, perfect for a quick and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ribeye steak, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 4 hoagie rolls
- 4 slices provolone cheese (or American cheese or Cheese Whiz)
Instructions
- Prepare the Steak: Freeze the ribeye for 10 minutes to make slicing easier. Thinly slice the steak and season with salt and pepper.
- Sauté Onions: Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and cook until softened and lightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from skillet.
- Cook Steak: In the same skillet, add the steak in a single layer. Sear for 1-2 minutes per side, then chop into smaller pieces as it cooks.
- Combine & Melt Cheese: Reduce heat to low, return onions to the skillet, and place cheese slices on top. Let the cheese melt, then mix everything together.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Fill each hoagie roll with the steak mixture and serve hot.
Notes
- Cheese Options: Use provolone for a classic taste, American cheese for creaminess, or Cheese Whiz for a rich flavor.
- Bread Substitutes: Soft deli rolls can replace hoagie rolls if needed.
- Additions: Sautéed bell peppers, mushrooms, or hot peppers can enhance the sandwich.
- Storage: Store the steak mixture in an airtight container for up to 3 days; reheat in a skillet before serving.
