Ingredients

For the Topping:

  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups blackberries (fresh or frozen)

For the Cake:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Prepare the Topping:
    • Melt butter and brown sugar in a saucepan over medium heat.
    • Add blackberries, toss to coat, and cook for 1 minute.
    • Pour into a greased 9-inch cake pan.
  • Make the Cake Batter:
    • Beat sugar and softened butter until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time.
    • Whisk dry ingredients in a separate bowl.
    • Mix vanilla extract into milk. Alternately add dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with dry ingredients.
